Gerard Way Teases First Look At Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion Villains

Fans of The Umbrella Academy are a patient bunch, and that patience has just been rewarded with a little tease. Young Animal curator, writer, musician and sometimes artist Gerard Way revealed an early look at the villains which are set to debut in the third volume of his Dark Horse Comics series, The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion.

On his Instagram page, Way revealed a piece of artwork introducing a supervillain team called The Phantom Five. “The Phantom Five have been in my head for almost 8 years and I always thought they’d make cool super villains for the Umbrella Academy to fight,” he wrote in the caption. “They are obviously a riff on the Fantastic Four, but ghosts.”

The artwork features the five villains, who appear to count among them a zombie, a sheet-ghost, a Jacob Marley-like character wearing chains, a “creepy little girl” (Way’s words) and some type of dog. However, Way warns that these designs will most assuredly change once series artist Gabriel Bá gets around to drawing them.

Someone’s gotta live in the Hotel Oblivion. My drawing skills have gotten super shitty over the last couple of years. Too much writing and not enough drawing or playing guitar, though the guitar seems to be coming back to me quick and I picked up where I left off. But yeah, not the best drawing. The Phantom Five have been in my head for almost 8 years and I always thought they’d make cool super villains for the Umbrella Academy to fight. I decided to get them out of my head this morning. They are obviously a riff on the Fantastic Four, but ghosts. Jacob Marely, creepy little girl, and big sheet ghost in the back are my favorites. I think the zombie should just be a torso with organs trailing and more of a ghoul and less of a zombie. These characters will dramatically improve when @gabriel_ba draws them. New characters don’t always start with my drawings, and less so over the years as Gab and I developed a really special working relationship. But sometimes they come from my scribbles, or old sketchbooks. Comic wise, we are more than halfway through the series, which is a longer 7 issues this time. We just wanted to get far ahead so we don’t ever ship the book late. #umbrellaacademy #hoteloblivion #UA #UASeries3

Hotel Oblivion was first announced in 2009, when volume 2 of the series, Dallas, had then recently concluded. It’s been almost nine years, but now volume 3 is finally approaching. “Comic wise, we are more than halfway through the series, which is a longer 7 issues this time,” Way confirmed. “We just wanted to get far ahead so we don’t ever ship the book late.”

Hopefully, this means we will get to see The Phantom Five in action soon.

The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion does not have a release date yet. However, fans of the comic book have a live-action television series, The Umbrella Academy, to look forward to, which is slated to drop on Netflix sometime later this year.
