Early Venom Reactions Range from Good to… Well, Venomous

Few films in recent memory have aroused the same kind of curiosity as Ruben Fleischer’s Venom. The very premise of the film is audacious — a Spider-Man villain acting as lethal protector, all while his signature nemesis is nowhere to be found. The supervillain-led film is the first of its kind in the modern age of superheroes, and if it does well at the box office it may be the blueprint for Sony’s own flavor of Marvel Cinematic Universe offshoot.

But the question on everyone’s lips is a simple one — does that flavor even taste good? Luckily, we don’t have to wait very long to find out.

Early reactions for Venom have started pouring onto social media as the first layer of embargoes are lifted (early social media reactions are separate from reviews, which will start going live tomorrow night). For Sony, it’s a momentous occasion that will likely inform how the company proceeds with rumored villain-led films that are set to focus on the likes of Morbius the Living Vampire, Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio.

So, without further delay, let’s see what the folks who got to see Venom early have to say and whether they think the film is downright amazing or just another turd in the wind.

Significant chunks of #Venom don’t work *at all* but there is some serious charm to the Eddie/Venom relationship. Not sure I had the intended reactions to some scenes but fun is fun – even when it’s totally ridiculous, right? It’s too bad they didn’t go for the R rating though.

I’m *fascinated* with VENOM. The cast seems to all know they’re in a darker superhero movie, except Tom Hardy who is basically remaking Jim Carrey’s Liar Liar. I kinda loved watching this movie, in a Rocky Horror type of way. At one point Tom Hardy and Venom make out.

Social embargo for #Venom is up. I talk about this a lot in my review but this is a movie that somehow slipped through a wormhole from 2004. That's my biggest take. It's a movie that spilled from the pre-MCU era through a crack in time and space.

#Venom wasn’t as bad as everyone was saying it was going to be. Tom Hardy is and always will be a great actor, and I laughed a lot — but I’m not sure whether that was intentional or not. Post-credit scene is 🔥

Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and #Venom has some really entertaining moments. A clunky script without nuance bogs the #Venom down, preventing it from choosing between being gritty, funny, or something unique.

#Venom was only the best superhero movie I’ve seen in along while. It’s refreshing to see a superhero film that wasn’t bogged down by years of movies and characters. Def a worth see. Sony really gave it their all.
