DC Announces The Flash: Year One

The Flash writer Joshua Williamson has penned the tales of the Scarlet Speedster since DC launched its Rebirth publishing initiative in 2016. During that time, Barry Allen has witnessed the returns of Wally West, Jay Garrick (briefly) and Hunter Zolomon, dealt with a Speed Force storm grant Central City citizens with super-speed, battled a Flash War and discovered the existence of the Still, Strength and Sage Forces.

Williamson will continue to push the envelope by following in the footsteps of classic DC stories with a new “Year One” story for The Flash.

The announcement was made during Saturday’s World’s Finest Panel at New York Comic Con. Williamson told the crowd in attendance how this is the Barry Allen story he’s been waiting to tell the most.

“Ever since I got the job on The Flash, I’ve wanted to tell this one story… I kept asking for it, asking for it, asking for it… This year, the book we’re announcing that we’re going to be doing… We’re going to be doing Barry’s first year as The Flash.” He cited Barry’s hope and optimism as the aspect of the Flash that inspired him to write this storyline. He wanted to explore how Barry came to be this way in the wake of his mother’s death and the early tragedies of his life.

As for whether Flash: Year One will be a spinoff title or take place inside The Flash ongoing, Williamson confirmed it would be the latter. “It’ll be in The Flash title like how ‘Year One’ was in the Batman title,” he added.
