Garnett was selected to receive the BHSU Distinguished Teacher Award

Garnett was recognized for his dedication to teaching, professional achievements, and exemplary service to the university. BHSU President Laurie S. Nichols and Dr.

Interim provost Pamela Carriveau presented Garnett with the award during one of his classes and congratulated him on receiving the highest faculty honor at BHSU.

Candidates for the Distinguished Faculty Award are nominated by other BHSU faculty and reviewed by the Distinguished Faculty Committee. They make recommendations to the Faculty Council, which then recommends finalists to the provost. In Garnett's nomination letter, a BHSU faculty member wrote, "Dr. Garnett was an accomplished researcher with a keen mathematical mind. However, what I admire most about him is his passion for teaching, his spirit of cooperation, his thoughtfulness and his work ethic. He has consistently shown a willingness to do what needs to be done to help math programs, schools, colleges, universities and communities."

During his nine years at BHSU, Garnett was known for his spirit of cooperation and commitment to his students. His teaching consistently ranked top in student opinion surveys conducted at the end of each course and won the Faculty of Arts Award for Excellence in Teaching for the 2019-20 academic year.

He regularly travels with students to the Rocky Mountain section of the American Mathematical Society and often leads the BHSU Mathematical Circle meetings, providing a wealth of activities for high school students and Math Enrichment Activities.

Garnett is an active scholar and has published in the fields of graph theory, combinatorial matrix theory, and combinatorics. He received the Faculty of Arts Award for Distinguished Research, Fellowship and Creative Activity in the 2015-2016 academic year and has served as a reviewer, judge and contributing editor of respected academic publications in mathematics.

Garnett has served on the BHSU Faculty Senate and is currently coordinator of college Algebra. He received the University Distinguished Service Award for the 2018-2019 academic year.

After receiving his PhD in mathematics from the University of Wyoming in 2011, Garnett was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Victoria in Canada. He joined the Mathematics department at Black Hills State University as an assistant professor in 2013 and was tenured and promoted to associate professor in 2019.
